Apparently anyone who’s involved in politics must have a blog, so here’s my attempt.
My ‘involvement’ began around the end of 2002/beginning of 2003, when I ought to have been studying for a degree. I had spent hours and hours on the website www.medialens.org before 5th February 2003, when Colin Powell gave his presentation to the UN, in which he made the case for invading Iraq. I burst into tears because I knew that thousands of people were going to be killed very soon. What was wrong with me? I was crying about something that hadn’t yet happened to people whom I hadn’t even met…
Since then, instead of crying, I’ve tried to do my bit to highlight what US/UK foreign policy in the Middle East really means. What we have done to Iraq is almost beyond comprehension. Iraq is incomparably worse now than it was pre-2003, and particularly pre-1990 when US-UK sanctions began destroying the country. I am unable to describe how strongly I feel about the enormity of the crimes committed in my name. However, trying to adequately describe my feelings is an activity I can keep for the diary beside my bed: this blog is meant to help increase awareness about what certain politicians (and journalists) do, in the hope that people will be informed and angry enough to hold them to account for their crimes and feel able to prevent similar crimes occurring in the future.
There may well be some po-faced, self-indulgent, self-righteous stuff in this blog – you have been warned. As long as I get my facts right, though, you can call me and this blog whatever you like.
Cheers
Neil
